This Regional Education for All site includes information on EFA news, EFA history, and EFA data and resources from across the region allowing users to draw on regional expertise to aid in research, sound policy making and implementation of educational programming towards the attainment of quality education for all. The Regional EFA website is maintained by the UIS-AIMS Unit on behalf of the UNESCO Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education.

Regional Launch of the 2010 EFA Global Monitoring Report in Thailand

The 2010 Education for All (EFA) Global Monitoring Report launched in Bangkok, Thailand on 25 June 2010 from 8.30 - 12.00 noon at Chulalongkorn University. Under the theme of “Reaching the Marginalized”, Gwang-Jo Kim, Director of UNESCO Bangkok gave a presentation on the 2010 education report. Key EFA progress was highlighted along with remaining challenges, in view of the region’s struggle to recover from the impact of the global economic crisis.

A panel discussion took place with the following panelists: Albert Motivans, Chief of the Education Indicators and Data Analysis Section of the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS), Abhimanyu Singh, Director of UNESCO Beijing Office and Former Director of UNESCO’s Division of International Coordination and Monitoring of EFA (2005), Harry Patrinos of the World Bank and Anupama Rao Singh, Regional Director of UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Office.

In the afternoon, a roundtable on “Financing quality education in the face of the global economic crisis: The Thailand Example” was held from 13:30- 15:30 hrs., also at Chulalongkorn University. Education for All Global Monitoring Report 2010: Reaching the Marginalized
The 2010 edition of the EFA Global Monitoring Report (GMR) focuses on reaching the marginalized in education and examines the impact of the global financial crisis on the poorest countries in the world. The report offers the Deprivation and Marginalization in Education (DME) data set that measures marginalization and uses data from national and household surveys, covering eighty countries, of which almost half are low-income countries. GENIA Toolkit 2009 - Promotes gender equality and mainstream gender in education
This fourth revised version of the GENIA toolkit is the result of consultation processes. The toolkit is designed to be used for a number of purposes under various contexts. Among its many qualities, the toolkit informs audiences on gender equality, can be used to analyze the degree of gender sensitivity of projects, used for advocacy on issues of gender equality, implemented as an assessment tool on the gender responsiveness of its staff and for gender training sessions to sensitize staff. EFA Mid-Decade Assessment Sub-Regional Synthesis Reports
As part of the Asia-Pacific EFA Mid-Decade Assessment process, countries carried out their national assessments with technical advice and support from EFA partner organizations at the national, sub-regional and regional levels. These reports are a compilation of national reports specific to the Mekong sub-region, Insular South-East Asia sub-region, South Asia and Central Asia. The reports provide a comparative assessment of progress towards EFA in the the sub-regions and aim to identify and locate the remaining gaps in terms of quality and equity sub-nationally, with a focus on disadvantaged and excluded populations. It highlights the contextual background of education in hopes of providing a framework for developing targeted policies and strategies that address the unique challenges of this region. Reaching the Unreached: Meeting of South-East Asian Countries to Achieve the EFA Goals Together by 2015
The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and UNESCO came together for the first time to organize and host a meeting on education. The aimed to take stock of the extent of initiatives and projects, identify remaining common challenges in attaining EFA goals, provide suggestions to accelerate progress towards reaching the unreached and develop activites and projects that South-East Asian countries can work together on, with the help of EFA partners. The meeting took place from 2 to 4 September 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand.

South Asia EFA Mid-Term Policy Review Conference
Representatives from South Asian countries, UN agencies and partners involved in education met in Nepal to prepare policy recommendations aimed at ensuring the achievement of the Education for All goals by 2015. Results of the national and sub-regional EFA Mid-Decade Assessment(MDA) reports and the 2008 EFA Global Monitoring Report were used to translate findings of the MDA into concrete actions, identify policy gaps, and propose policies and strategies towards reaching the un-reached groups in education. The conference was held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 16 to 19 June 2008. Read more

South-East Asia EFA Mid-Term Policy Review Conference and 2008 EFA Global Monitoring Report Launch
Representatives from South-East Asian countries, UN agencies and partners involved in education gathered in Thailand to prepare policy recommendations aimed at ensuring the achievement of EFA by 2015 using results of the national and sub-regional EFA Mid-Decade Assessment (MDA) reports and the 2008 EFA Global Monitoring Report. The conference was held in Jomtien, Thailand from 18 to 21 February 2008. Read more
