The aimed to take stock of the extent of initiatives and projects, identify remaining common challenges in attaining EFA goals, provide suggestions to accelerate progress towards reaching the unreached and develop activites and projects that South-East Asian countries can work together on, with the help of EFA partners. The meeting took place from 2 to 4 September 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand. Read more South Asia EFA Mid-Term Policy Review Conference Representatives from South Asian countries, UN agencies and partners involved in education met in Nepal to prepare policy recommendations aimed at ensuring the achievement of the Education for All goals by 2015. Results of the national and sub-regional EFA Mid-Decade Assessment(MDA) reports and the 2008 EFA Global Monitoring Report were used
to translate findings of the MDA into concrete actions, identify policy gaps, and propose policies and strategies towards reaching the un-reached groups in education. Representatives from South-East Asian countries, UN agencies and partners involved in education gathered in Thailand to prepare policy recommendations aimed at ensuring the achievement of EFA by 2015 using results of the national and sub-regional EFA Mid-Decade Assessment (MDA) reports and the 2008 EFA Global Monitoring Report. Based on the key findings of the 2008 EFA Global Monitoring Report, this eight-page card contains key education statistics from selected East Asian countries. Among education indicators featured are the EFA Development Index which tracks EFA progress in countries. Also included are gender disparities in secondary education, trends in primary net enrolment ratios, public expenditure on education, adult and youth literacy rates, and the number of out-of-school children. Publications EFA Global Monitoring Report 2008 Education for All by 2015 - Will we make it? is available for downloading in six UN languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. The 2008 edition offers a mid-term review of progress across the six EFA goals since 1999. A View Inside Primary Schools - A World Education Indicators (WEI) cross-national study The UNESCO Institute for Statistics has launched a new report, entitled A View Inside Primary Schools on Wednesday, 28 May 2008. The report is a part of the World Education Indicators (WEI) programme and presents results of a unique survey conducted in 11 countries in Latin America, Asia and North America. "This survey offers a wealth of data. On the one hand, we see the extent to which schools lack the most basic elements - running water or electricity - that are taken for granted in the developed countries," says Hendrik van der Pol, director of the Institute. "But the data also reveal how social inequality affects a child's opportunity to learn. And clearly, no country - rich or poor - is immune to these disparities." Using a Literacy Module for Household Surveys: A Guidebook The Assessment, Information Systems, Monitoring and Statistics (AIMS) Unit, in collaboration with the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) Headquarters in Montreal, the UNESCO Bangkok Education sector and Japanese Funds-in-Trust (JFIT), has developed this guidebook in order to help social surveyors effectively use the module when they plan and conduct household surveys. The Household Survey-based Literacy Module presents a series of questions that examine literacy levels and gather information about the use of literacy skills in daily life. This guidebook is primarily intended for statistical and planning units dealing with literacy within education ministries and statisticians in charge of household survey design within national statistical offices (NSOs) of developing countries. English version (pdf/3.4MB) Thai version (pdf/4MB) Guidelines for countries undertaking EFA assessment now available On behalf of the Regional Thematic Working Group on EFA, UNESCO Bangkok’s AIMS Unit - the Office of the UNESCO Institute for Statistics Regional Advisor for Asia-Pacific - and the UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Office, have released the working draft of the Guidelines for the Asia and Pacific EFA Mid-Decade Assessment: Identifying and Reaching the Unreached. The document is primarily designed to support countries and provide the guidance and tools required to carry out the EFA assessment. The document is still a working draft and is being distributed for further technical review and comments. In the meantime, countries can use the Guidelines as reference but should take into account that it is still a draft version. Download the word version (4MB) EFA Mid-Decade Assessment Meeting Report (Country Recommendations) This report contains a summary of presentations and the recommendations agreed to by country representatives during the EFA Mid-Decade Assessment Planning Meeting in October 2005. Published by UNESCO Bangkok's AIMS Unit, this report can be a useful reference for countries planning to assess their progress and gaps in achieving the EFA goals. Download the Meeting Report (pdf/940 KB) Children Out of School: Measuring Exclusion from Primary Education An estimated 115 million primary school-age children are out of school according to a joint UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS)-UNICEF report. The report seeks to assess better the magnitude of the problem and monitor progress towards the 2015 EFA targets. It also looks at why children leave school early and the use of household survey data for providing greater insights about the out-of-school population and demand for education.
