A View Inside Primary Schools - A World Education Indicators (WEI) cross-national study
The UNESCO Institute for Statistics launched a new report, entitled A View Inside Primary Schools on Wednesday, 28 May 2008. The report is a part of the World Education Indicators (WEI) programme and presents results of a unique survey conducted in 11 countries in Latin America, Asia and North America. "This survey offers a wealth of data. On the one hand, we see the extent to which schools lack the most basic elements - running water or electricity - that are taken for granted in the developed countries," says Hendrik van der Pol, director of the Institute. "But the data also reveal how social inequality affects a child's opportunity to learn. And clearly, no country - rich or poor - is immune to these disparities." To download the full report, visit the UIS website.

Using a Literacy Module for Household Surveys: A Guidebook
The Assessment, Information Systems, Monitoring and Statistics (AIMS) Unit, in collaboration with the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) Headquarters in Montreal, the UNESCO Bangkok Education sector and Japanese Funds-in-Trust (JFIT), has developed this guidebook in order to help social surveyors effectively use the module when they plan and conduct household surveys. The Household Survey-based Literacy Module presents a series of questions that examine literacy levels and gather information about the use of literacy skills in daily life. This guidebook is primarily intended for statistical and planning units dealing with literacy within education ministries and statisticians in charge of household survey design within national statistical offices (NSOs) of developing countries. Download the guidebook (pdf/1MB)

Towards Information Literacy Indicators
The UNESCO Information for All Programme (IFAP) and the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) have published a new booklet, Towards Information Literacy Indicators, which proposes a framework that measures the impact of knowledge societies from the public's viewpoint and governments' priorities. The framework defines information literacy and introduces its implications, particularly from a measurement perspective. Methodologies including the UIS Literacy Assessment and Monitoring Programme (LAMP) were drawn upon, and elements from the UIS press and broadcast surveys were also used. Countries can use the Guidelines as reference but should take into account that it is still a draft version. Prepared on behalf of the Regional Thematic Working Group on EFA by UNESCO Bangkok’s UIS-AIMS Unit and the UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Office. Download the word version (4MB)
