It is essential that media and information specialists have access to training, continuing education and lifelong learning. CI provides information and media professionals with opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills by supporting the participation of selected professionals - mainly from Lao PDR, Myanmar and Thailand - in regional and in-country seminars and training workshops.

Information literacy workshops for librarians, Lao PDR, 4-8 May 2009
A five-day workshop on information literacy will be organized in Vientiane, Lao PDR, from 4- 8 May 2009. About 30 librarians from Vientiane and the provinces are expected to participate. Two UNESCO-sponsored participants to a regional “training-the-trainers workshop for information literacy” organized in Port Dickson, Malaysia in 2008 will serve as the local trainers and facilitate the group work. The main trainers will be information literacy experts from Thailand. The workshop will be co-organized by the National Library of Laos.
Information literacy workshops, Thailand, 12-16 May and 22-29 May 2009
Built upon the success of an October 2008 information literacy workshop, UNESCO has been approached to train more librarians employed in both public and school libraries, under the supervision of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. The workshops are being tailored to better fit the needs of the participants. While each workshop will accommodate 40 trainees, it will also benefit from the participation of past trainers who will serve as group coaches. This will also enable them to refresh their knowledge and further hone their information literacy skills.
Memory of the World (MOW) awareness raising teacher training pilot project, Singapore and Thailand, June 2009
To raise secondary school students’ awareness about the importance of documentary heritage, UNESCO will pilot an awareness raising programme in selected schools in Singapore and Thailand. Secondary schools will be selected to attend a two-day training workshop. For teachers in Singapore, the workshop will be held on 1-2 June 2009; and Thailand, 4-5 June 2009. Upon completion of the training workshops, the teachers will teach their students about documentary heritage. They will then each select five students for the next phase of the pilot programme.
MOW awareness raising short video production workshops, Singapore and Thailand, June 2009
Subsequent to teacher training workshops and in-school follow-up activities, selected students will participate in a week-long workshop in short video production skills. The workshop for Singaporean students will be conducted by the Asian Film Archive, from 8-12 June 2009. The Thai Film Foundation will conduct a workshop for Thai students in Bangkok from 15-18 June 2009. Equipped with basic knowledge in short video production, the students will work in groups of five to produce short awareness raising videos to promote the MOW programme and the preservation of documentary heritage.
Information literacy awareness raising seminar, Cambodia, 8-9 June 2009
As a follow up to the “regional training-the-trainers workshop for information literacy”, organized in Port Dickson, Malaysia, in 2008, and with the assistance of the Cambodian participant to the workshop, UNESCO is supporting the organization of a two-day awareness raising seminar on information literacy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 8-9 June 2009. The University of Technology Mara, Malaysia, has been requested to co-host the seminar through the provision of two prominent speakers.
Science programme co-production consultation, Thailand, July 2009
In collaboration with the Goethe-Institut, Bangkok, UNESCO will host the first consultation of television science programme producers in a co-production project. Television senior managers and programme producers from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam will be invited to the consultation, which will be held in Bangkok in July 2009. The co-production consultation is expected to be an answer to the need for locally produced scientific content in the lower Mekong countries. The second consultation and/or ensuing workshop will be hosted by the Goethe-Institut, Bangkok.
Fourth Session of APIN in Hanoi, Vietnam, 26-28 November 2008
Twenty delegates will participate in the Fourth APIN session under the Information for All Programme (IFAP). They will discuss: the implementation of national information policies and knowledge strategies; collaboration and cooperation in the development of information tools; suggest a strategy to support ICT and information literacy; and discuss an awareness-raising mechanism for APIN so that the network can have an impact in the Asia-Pacific region.
The venue is the National Centre for Scientific and Technological Information (NACESTI), Hanoi, Vietnam.

Training workshop for Librarians, Thailand, 13-16 October 2008
UNESCO’s CI unit collaborated with the Department of Library and Information Science, and the Central Library of Srinakharinwirot University (Prasarnmit) to train 40 public and school librarians attached to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration in information literacy. A training workshop was organized from 13-16 October 2008 in the Central Library of Srinakharinwirot University to enhance the participants’ information literacy knowledge and skills. Policy makers and managers of the libraries were also invited to attend the first part of the programme, which helped them to understand the concept and the importance of information literacy. Group work provided the librarians with hands-on experience of information literacy skills.
