Major Highland Ethnicity by Sub-district, Mae Hong Son Province.

The majority of surveyed villages in Mae Hong Son are made up of 100-300 people each. The smallest village surveyed had 56 residents. This was a Karen village located in the Mae Suat sub-district. The largest village surveyed had about 1250 residents, located in Pang Mu sub-district and the residents were predominately Tai Yai/Shan.

There are 4 principle highland ethnic groups living in Mae Hong Son, according to the Highland Peoples' Survey Phase II: Lahu, Karen, Hmong, and Tai Yai/Shan. Approximately 2% of the rest of the population is composed of Akha, Lisu, Mien, Khamu, Lua, Tai Lue, Palong, Chinese, Burmese, or other ethnicities.
