Project partners

The project was initiated by UNESCO in 2000 with primary support from the Government of Norway, and supplementary funding from the Government of New Zealand.

UNESCO have invested considerable effort in ensuring that partnerships are formed with local religious organizations (especially the religious governing orders), government agencies which are mandated to fulfill similar goals and academic institutions which are regionally-based.

Partnerships with local and national agencies in the form of required matching contributions of financial and institutional resources will ensure long-term project sustainability in all sites.
Project partners include:

  • Government of Norway
  • Government of New Zealand
  • Nordic World Heritage Foundation (NWHF)
  • National Commissions for UNESCO
  • Provincial and National Ministries of Culture
  • Fine Arts Schools and Universities
  • Buddhist Sanghas
  • Traditional Masters
