Workshop on the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection Of Underwater Cultural Heritage, Hong Kong SAR, China, 18-20 November 2003

To assist in the promotion of the new Convention in the Asia-Pacific region, the Office of the UNESCO Regional Advisor for Culture in Asia and the Pacific organized a regional workshop to introduce and discuss the implementation of the 2001 Convention in Hong Kong, SAR China from 18-20 November 2003. Among the participants were delegates and experts from 18 Member States from the Asia-Pacific region and five countries from Europe and the United States. During the workshop, the Convention was examined in detail, with the help of international experts in different disciplines, emphasizing the legal, curatorial and archaeological aspects.  A regional Plan of Action was adopted by the delegates to this workshop to serve as a roadmap to promote the Convention and its principles throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

The Asia-Pacific Plan of Action includes activities to create awareness of the importance of the Convention within the concerned professions working in both governmental and non-governmental capacities, so that effective action can be taken to safeguard underwater sites through appropriate policy, legislation and management systems, including the training of a core of professionals specialized in the field of underwater culture heritage management.
