Training Programme on Underwater Cultural Heritage in Sri Lanka

To sustain the momentum generated by the 2003 Hong Kong Workshop, and in response to the popular demand for capacity building among Member States in the Asia-Pacific region, the Office of the UNESCO Regional Advisor for Culture in Asia and the Pacific organized an initial training programme for Sri Lankan archaeologists and conservators in Galle, Sri Lanka in March 2006.

The training course organized in partnership with the Central Cultural Fund and the Post Graduate Institute of Archaeology of the University of Kelaniya of Sri Lanka and funded under Regular Programme funds of UNESCO Beijing Office benefitted twelve Sri Lankan nationals and one Chinese national.

With funding from the regional project, a second training course funded under the regional project was organized in March 2008 in Galle, Sri Lanka was participated by 14 Sri Lankan experts from the Maritime Archaeology Unit, the Department of Archaeology, the Department of National Museums and Sri Lankan Navy.
