The Italian Government

Following a mission to Myanmar in 2011 to meet with culture authorities, UNESCO has re-activated its cultural heritage support to Myanmar. The government has requested UNESCO’s support to inscribe sites to the World Heritage List, starting with the ancient Pyu Cities and the archaeological site of Bagan.

To support this, funding has been secured from the Government of Italy for the project “Building Capacity to Safeguard Cultural Heritage in Myanmar”, implemented by UNESCO in close cooperation with the Ministry of Information and Culture’s Department of Archaeology, National Museum and Library (DoA).

The project has three components:

  1. building up technical capacity in heritage site conservation and management;
  2. establishing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for the management of cultural heritage sites in Myanmar;
  3. supporting the process of nominating World Heritage sites.
