Dwarika’s Hotel, Kathmandu
Since the 1950s, the passion of Dwarika Das Shrestha was to rescue and preserve the fast disappearing traditional culture and architecture of Kathmandu Valley. In order to generate income for expensive conservation and restoration works, Dwarika opened a 10-room guesthouse in conjunction with his traditional woodcarving collections. Today, his project has grown into a 76-room 5-star luxury hotel that welcomes over 3000 visitors a day. Total construction time took over 30 years and the income of the Hotel is continuing to pursue Dwarika’s dream. The project was started in 1972 with the building of the Lumbini Guest House and was completed in 1998 with the completion of the Arnica wing.
