Sangiin Dalai Monastery, South Gobi Aimaq

Founded in 1772, the Sangiin Dalai Monastery lies close to the border of Inner Mongolia. It housed 500 Buddhist monks until the 1930s, when the monastery was closed during the Communist era and converted into an army camp. A conservation effort began in 2001 to rehabilitate the ruined temple so that it might provide its traditional spiritual and social services once more to the local community, among the poorest in Mongolia.
