Samchuk Community and Old Market District, Suphanburi

The market town of Samchuk is situated on the Tha Chin River in central Thailand. It was an important entrepĂ´t throughout the nineteenth century, although the gradual decline of river traffic in has meant a downturn in the fortunes of the town. Although the market has become a busy tourist destination, the wooden shophouses of the surrounding community have deteriorated over the years due to termite and rain damage. The conservation effort has been spearheaded by local residents, and has taken a practical, grass-roots approach to restoring these structures while preserving the authenticity of the settlement.
