2nd Sub-regional Workshop in Vigan, Philippines 2001

World Heritage in Young Southeast Asian Hands: Introducing the Arts for Teaching on the Historical Environment

The "Second Sub-regional Workshop: Introducing the Arts for Teaching on the Historic Environment" was held in the World Heritage town of Vigan, Philippines from 16 to 22 December 2001.

The workshop focused on innovative teaching approaches (Arts and the Historic Environment): using the creative arts to discover and learn about the historic environment and expose youth to new environments, different cultures and world influences captured in World Heritage sites.

Educators and heritage experts from Southeast Asia had the opportunity to learn about creative arts as a teaching tool and to develop innovative activities that can serve as and inspire imaginative teaching materials for Southeast Asia, the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

As part of this workshop, participants went beyond the World Heritage Education Resource Kit and created new, supplementary activity sheets for teaching about World Heritage.  Titled the Vigan Heritage Education Art (HEart) activity sheets, these activities highlight the heritage particular to Southeast Asia and use indigenous artistic concepts and techniques to teach about that heritage.
