Shuichi Nakayama is a Professor Emeritus of Hiroshima University, and is currently a Professor at the Hiroshima University of Economics in Japan. He is also the Chair of the Education Sub-Committee, Japanese National Commission for UNESCO. In 2004 he worked as a consultant at the UNESCO Bangkok office, conducting a Situational Analysis of ESD in the Asia-Pacific region.
Shuichi was the Director of the Institute of Peace Science at Hiroshima University from 2002 to 2003, and was Professor of Geography and Curriculum Development, Hiroshima University from 1995 to 2003. He received his Ph.D. in Geography from Banaras Hindu University, India, in 1972, and his Doctor of Literature in Human Geography from Hiroshima University in 1978.
He has published many articles and books in Human Geography. At the same time, he has devoted himself to the research field in geography curriculum development. He was a senior research fellow at the Global Education Centre of the University of Minnesota, USA (1987-88) under the Fulbright programme, under which he conducted research on the renaissance movement of geography education in the United States.
