Participatory Research and Development: Implications for Higher Education
Rajesh Tandon
Society for Participatory Research in Asia, India
The challenges facing humanity today are causing us to question our very survival. Massive ecological degradation, climate change, escalating violence and widespread inequality are threatening civilization itself. In such a context, production and utilization of knowledge and training of young professionals requires a new approach. This paper argues that the perspectives of participatory research can inform the knowledge mobilization functions of higher education. Likewise, the principles of participatory development can enrich the teaching function. The paper discusses the benefits of participatory research and development and examines the significant challenges that institutions of higher education, their staff and students face in integrating the perspectives of participatory research and development into their research and teaching functions.
