Raja Roy Singh Lecture
Stephen Toope
University of British Columbia
Canada Universities are at the forefront of the search for sustainable solutions to environmental degradation and the accompanying threat of social collapse. Solutions may come in part through educational reform and the introduction of relevant curricular materials. Another approach is through the implementation of the principles of sustainability in the business practices and daily operations of the educational institution itself, modelling the principles it wishes to teach. A third means of inculcating the goals of sustainability is to involve faculty and students more closely in the fabric of the society they wish to serve, through service learning and collaborative research projects that bring the community and educators into a new and fruitful working relationship. All these approaches have been introduced at the University of British Columbia, whose experience in these areas may prove useful to other universities.
