Learning to Live Together: Reorienting Teacher Education to Strengthen School-based Initiatives

26-29 October 2009, Ha Long, Vietnam

A Sub-Regional Workshop on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Education for International Understanding (EIU) was held from 26 to 29 October 2009 in Ha Long, Vietnam.

Co-organized by UNESCO Bangkok, Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU) and the Vietnamese National Commission for UNESCO, and funded by Korea’s voluntary contribution to UNESCO, the workshop was hosted by the Hanoi National University of Education (HNUE).

The objective of the Workshop was to identify strategic areas of intervention with regard to teachers training activities and curriculum development to promote school-based initiatives based on EIU and ESD values and concepts.

It also intended to facilitate collaborative efforts among teachers and teacher educators of this sub-region in capacity-building and innovation of their teacher education methods in order to promote the introduction of ESD and EIU topics at the school-level.

The following ESD and EIU thematic issues were identified to see how they can be incorporated into specific lesson plans and school projects:

  • Education for International Understanding
  • Introduction to Sustainability
  • Peace Education
  • Environmental Protection

The Workshop was attended by 40 teacher educators and senior teachers from Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia. Four resource persons with different areas of expertise guided the participants through interactive activities to understand the ESD and EIU thematic issues better. Each session was followed by parallel sessions conducted in the national languages dedicated to the application at the national contests of the concepts introduced during the plenary thematic sessions. Furthermore, show cases on      Environmental Education, Human Rights Education and Education beyond Schooling were presented by three invited speakers to provide the participants with concrete examples of school project and lessons plans in Malaysia, Cambodia and Laos.

During the workshop, the participants had developed lesson plans and school projects as follow-up activities when they return to their respective institutions.
