5th Asia-Pacific Training of Trainers Workshop on EIU and ESD

To promote Education for International Understanding (EIU) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), the 5th Asia-Pacific Training of Trainers Workshop on EIU and ESD was held in Chiangmai, Thailand on 19-29 September 2005.

The workshop was jointly organized by UNESCO Asia-Pacific Regional Bureau for Education in Bangkok and Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU). Twenty teachers and teacher educators from twelve UNESCO member states in the region participated in this workshop.

Three main themes, namely, Cultural Respect and Solidarity, Peace and Equity, and Sustainability were discussed during the workshop, along with a variety of group activities. Human Rights was included as a cross-cutting theme.

The facilitators used participatory method to involve the participants in understanding both the content and process of these themes.  The process of knowing, understanding, valuing and acting was reinforced in each of these themes.  Two films on actions of genocide in Rwanda were shown to sensitize the participants on the violent outcomes of ethnic conflict.  The participants were taken to a field trip to visit minority group villages in northern Thailand where they were exposed to organic farming, collective empowerment among these communities.  The workshop ended with the participants preparing their own action plans on how to incorporate EIU/ESD in their own educational setting.
