Photo Contest 2010 closed on 30 June 2010

UNESCO Bangkok - along with the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI), East Asia and Pacific (EAP) and South Asia (SA) are thankful to you all for sending photo entries as part of the photo contest on the theme of: Promoting Gender Equality in Education - Five years to go until 2015: What have we accomplished? Please note the names of the winning photo entries will be announced by the end of September, 2010. The photo contest closed on 30th June,2010

International Women's Day, 2009

Every year in March, UNESCO celebrates International Women’s Day (March 8) by hosting a flagship programme, consisting of round-tables, conferences, exhibitions and cultural events that highlight issues relating to the empowerment of women and the promotion of gender equality. This year, 2008, in view of the theme of the International Women's Day (8 March) on promoting gender responsive governance and finance, the theme of Gender Responsive Budget for the education sector was identified for the annual capacity building meeting of GENIA. As one of the leading countries in the Asia-Pacific region in the field of gender responsive budget research and practice, the Republic of Korea was identified as the venue of the meeting, the Korean Institute for Gender Equality Promotion and Education (KIGEPE) as resource partner of GENIA, has agreed to host and jointly organize the meeting, together with the UNDP Office in Republic of Korea (ROK) for this year's meeting.

UNESCO Bangkok is pleased to announce the reult of the  photo contest organised in 2008 on the theme of, “Promoting Gender Equality in Education.” This contest is an effort for demonstrating “gender equality in action” through the means of photos for contributing to better understanding of what gender equality to education, in education and through education may mean to all of us.  The 13 winning photos have been featured in UNESCO Bangkok's 2009 Gender in Education Calendar posted on UNESCO Bangkok's website.

Countries meet to develop gender equality measurement indicators

From 9 to 11 September 2008, delegations from Cambodia, Mongolia, Sri Lanka and Viet Nam, as well as participants from Nepal, acting as resource persons,  met in Bangkok to review the needs assessment of their respective countries, discuss possible generic indicators for measuring gender equality in education and develop a national follow-up action plan.  Readmore




A tribute

UNESCO Bangkok pays special tribute to Jackie Kirk, who passed away in Afghanistan in August 2008.


She was a member of the Gender Advocacy Brief Advisory Committee and the author of two of these Advocacy Brief series: "The Impact of Women Teachers on Girls' Education" and "Education in Emergencies: the Gender Implications". Read more

Gender Equality – The Importance of Starting Early

The Gender Focal Point in the Ministry of Education of Lao PDR organized a training workshop for Dongkhamxang Crèche and Kindergarten Teacher Training School Administrators and Lecturers. The workshop took place on 11-14 September 2007 at Dongkhamxang Teacher Training College in Vientiane. This is one of a series of workshops organized by the Ministry of Education. Read more
