Asia-Pacific Regional Policy Forum on ECCE, 19-21 July 2016, Putrajaya, Malaysia

The second Asia-Pacific Regional Policy Forum on Early Childhood Care and Education will take place in Putrajaya, Malaysia from 19-21 July 2016. This second regional policy forum on ECCE will build on the momentum created for education in general and ECCE in particular by a series of international fora, including the World Education Forum (Incheon, May 2015), the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit (New York, September 2015) and the Forth International Conference on Poverty Reduction and Child Development (Beijing, October 2015).

The theme of this policy forum is “The Transformative Power of Early Childhood: Innovations for Inclusivity and Quality”. The SDGs recognize that early childhood development, care and education can help drive the transformation we hope to achieve over the next 15 years. Young children’s holistic development and enhanced learning and the achievement of the SDGs are highly interlinked because the former has a strong multiplier effect which can transform individuals and societies. The policy forum thus aims to provide a platform for high-level policy makers of Asia and Pacific countries to share experiences and lessons learnt in developing and implementing ECCE policies and discuss innovative strategies to improve the equity and quality of ECCE. It is expected that the policy forum will result in a regional declaration which encompasses the Asia-Pacific region’s priorities and strategies to achieve SDG Target 4.2 including a regional monitoring mechanism.

The Forum will be organized by UNESCO, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Asia-Pacific Regional Network for Early Childhood (ARNEC). The Forum will be hosted by the Government of Malaysia and supported by the financial contributions of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Strategy and Finance of the Republic of Korea and the Open Society Foundations.
