7 - 9 December 2005
UNESCO Bangkok, Thailand
The power of the media in shaping people’s thoughts and values is undeniable, and it is therefore imperative that sufficient consideration be given at an early stage to engaging the media in ESD. Towards this aim, UNESCO Bangkok’s ESD and Public Information offices are currently participating in efforts to create a Media Training and Resource Kit for journalists.
The content for the media kit was drafted by an international panel of media professionals and other communication experts who met at UNESCO Bangkok from 7 to 9 December 2005.
The meeting and earlier consultations leading up to it were a direct result of the “International Workshop on Development of Multimedia Packages and ICT Tools to Promote Education for Sustainable Development,” which was held in Okayama, Japan, in August 2004 as part of the preparatory process for the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. Participants at the Okayama workshop issued a number of media-related recommendations, in particular, requesting UNESCO to publish a handbook on ESD. The handbook has since evolved into the Media Training and Resource Kit.
The Resource Kit, due to be published towards mid-2006, will provide information for journalists on sustainable development and ESD, and also contains sample stories, articles and guidelines that could help reporters in smaller developing countries - where independent media may be relatively recent - to produce good sustainable development news stories.
The Media Kit will draw on existing training and resource materials, as well as on the experience of other journalists and communication specialists.
