International Workshop
UNESCO – UNU/IAS – ESD-J – OTIC – COINN – Promoting Committee on Asia Education - Centre for Sustainable Development
Okayama, Japan
August 2004
The objectives of this workshop were to develop tools to be used for advocating and promoting ESD. Participants included representatives from the media, UNESCO, NGOs and universities. Implementing ESD requires widespread advocacy and a responsible media committed to encouraging informed and active citizens.
Sample articles and short messages on SD for radio, newspaper, TV have been produced by participants. ICTs are the lifeblood of media involvement as a means of linking distant partners, storing data, sharing information and news. ICTs offer new modes and spaces of learning. One outcome of this workshop was the development of a template for DESD national websites and a design brief for a learning multimedia product related to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Biosphere Reserves and local ESD projects. For those local communities without internet access, guidelines for community level multimedia learning materials were drafted. The medium to be used include videos, posters, plays, puppet shows, etc.
