<p><font color="#33711E">Symposium: Education for Sustainability<strong> </strong></font></p>

On 17 April, 2005, the Japan Association for the 2005 World Exposition and Japan Council on the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD-J) held a Symposium: “Learning for Sustainability- The UN Decade of ESD and Aichi Exposition NGO Global Village".

 

The NGO Global Village was a forum organized for 30 NGOs from around the world to advocate Education for Sustainability. It  was held from 23 March to 23 September 2005 in the Aichi Prefecture of Japan.

 

Mr. Osamu Abe, Chair of ESD-J, gave a brief introduction about the vision and objectives of Education for Sustainable Development. Mr. Derek Elias, ESD Programme Specialist of UNESCO Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education, delivered the presentation on International Environment for the DESD, focusing on National Launches of DESD in Asia and the Pacific. Subsequently, Mr. Michihiro Shimano, Chief School Inspector, Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Sports, Japan, informed about School Education and ESD in his presentation. 

 

In the second session, ESD-J and local stakeholders including junior high school students introduced the activities and the programmes being undertaken in Nagoya and Okayama City, Japan, for case studies of ESD. In the third session, a discussion was held by the speakers and audience in conjunction with the undertaking of NGO Global Village.
