Gender equality in education, as one of the six 'Education For All' goals, is a crucial part of UNESCO's work. For many years UNESCO in the Asia-Pacific region, along with other UN agencies, has been working towards reducing gender disparities in education within the Asia-Pacific region.

Gender Gaps in Primary Education: South Asia

Girls' enrollment in schools is an important factor for women's social, economic and political empowerment. World wide, as of 2000, 115 million school-age children were still not in school and 56 per cent of those children were girls. Moreover, 94 per cent were in developing countries, mostly in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
