18-20 April 2007
Hanoi, Viet Nam
Journalists from seven South-East Asian countries and NGO representatives participated in the training workshop organized by UNESCO Bangkok in collaboration with UNESCO Hanoi.
The workshop was aimed at strengthening awareness and understanding among journalists and UN/INGO communication officers in the sub-region on the importance of education on human development. Participants developed story ideas and discussed issues on media coverage related to education. A session on making sense of education statistics citing examples from the EFA Global Monitoring Report was also discussed.
Education as a basic human right, the theme for this year’s EFA Global Action Week (23-29 April 2007) was also used as over-arching theme for the workshop. Participating journalists were from Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam.
UNESCO Bangkok’s Information and Knowledge Management Unit, and the Assessment, Information Systems, Monitoring and Statistics Unit, which is the Regional Office of the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS), are the main organizers of the workshop. The workshop was funded through UNESCO’s External Relations and Cooperation sector.
