Men and Gender Equality
Although in many peoples' minds the word gender is often equated with women, promoting gender equality is, and ought to be, a responsibility of both men and women. Many social issues, inclusing combating the AIDS epidemic and gender based violence, and developing more equal partnerships among men and women, require an active engagement from men and women. From both, there needs to be an exploration of current masculine and feminine roles, as well as the will to change them. Below you will find references to some documents addressing this issue.
"Let's Talk Men" is a series of educational films on masculinities produced by UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia (UNICEF ROSA), and is designed as an experimental learning tool to address the problems of increasing violence against girls. The primary target audience are adolescents, particularly boys, between thirteen and twenty years of age. As men are the perpetrators of violence towards women, allowing them to explore and question their masculinities, roles and responsibilities at this young age is the purpose of this series. The video is accompanied with a facilitation guide, and can be used in the absence of, or in conjunction with, existing programmes.
