Non-Formal Education

Non-formal education (NFE) is usually provided to out-of-school children and adolescents as well as young adults who, for some reason, did not have an opportunity to attend school. Others dropped out before a sustainable literacy level was achieved. Contrary to the formal school system, NFE programmes generally have many girls and/or women enrolled. However, the quality of the programmes is not always good enough and the timing of classes does not always fit women's schedules. These problems result in high drop-out rates.
In Community Learning Centres (CLCs), the majority of learners are often women. But, few women participate in the management committees of these centres or influence the decisions about what courses are offered, when and to whom. As a result, women's practical needs and interests as housewives, mothers and caretakers are better addressed than women's strategic or empowerment needs (e.g. negotiation skills, knowledge about their rights, decision making skills at the family and community levels, etc.)
