Engaging with Young People: Removing Legal and Access Barriers (Side Event at ESCAP Asia-Pacific High-level Intergovernment Meeting, 6-8 February 2012)

19.01.2012

Wednesday 8 February 2011
 (11:45 AM to 1 PM)
Conference Room 1, United Nations Conference Center, Bangkok, Thailand

This event is a side event at the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific Asia-Pacific High-level Intergovernmental Meeting on the Assessment of Progress against Commitments in the Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS and the Millennium Development Goals.

UNICEF and UNESCO have worked closely with YouthLEAD, the Asia Pacific Network of Young People from Key Affected Populations, to design an interactive and participatory event that gets government delegates thinking about what young people in their countries need, particularly when it comes to a policy and legal context.

The session objectives are to:

  • review legal and policy barriers to HIV services (prevention, treatment, care and support) faced by young people, including young key affected populations; and
  • encourage governments to move toward formal mechanisms that give a voice to youth, including key affected populations, in national HIV policy and programming.
