Project on Banking
Arunasree Ganti, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Public School, Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad, India

Saving money is an important aspect in life. A project was designed for the Middle School Commercial Mathematics class at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Public School in Andhra Pradesh, India, to inculcate the habit of saving and promote awareness about the various banking services and facilities. In this project, the students learned about percentages, income tax, payments by instalments, compound interest and so on.

Through multimedia presentations, the students were introduced to the concept of banking services. They visited a bank to gain hands-on knowledge about opening bank accounts and understanding the different facilities on offer, including the ATM, lockers, telebanking, Erail, Demat accounts, and internet banking. They interviewed and surveyed bank customers via email, the internet and telephone to gather information about opening bank accounts and the use of these facilities. Using multimedia tools and programmes, the students presented the results of their interviews and surveys. Through email, the students also contacted customers of banks in the United States to learn about the American banking system and gain a comparison to the banking system in India.

Many students opened their own accounts, and encouraged domestic staff such as maids and drivers to start their own personal saving plans. A play was produced to promote the importance of saving money and to share their knowledge of banking systems and their services.
