Policy Makers' Forum and Workshop, Fiji, 25-30 September 2006

Participants at the UNESCO Forum and Capacity Building Workshop held in Fiji in September 2006.
As part of the "ICT in Education Policy" project, the UNESCO Bangkok office convened a “High-Level Policy Makers’ Forum” and “Capacity Building Workshop" in Fiji, from 25 to 30 September, 2006. Ministers of Education and ministry officials from 14 Member States of the Pacific region attended the two events.
The one-day Policy Makers’ Forum, held in Nadi, provided a unique opportunity for high-level representatives of Pacific Island countries to share their experiences and strategies related to the effective use of ICT in education.
The Forum was immediately followed by a five-day "Capacity Building Workshop". At the workshop, which was held in Lautoka, participants were introduced to the “ICT in Education Toolkit for Policy Makers, Planners and Practitioners” which was designed as part of the “ICT in Education Policy” project.
This project is currently being implemented by the UNESCO Bangkok office with the support of Japanese Funds-in-Trust, Knowledge Enterprise, the Academy for Educational Development, and infoDev.
The Capacity Building Workshop is the third in a series of workshops in the Asia-Pacific region which have introduced policy makers to the Toolkit. The first workshop in the series was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in September 2005, and was attended by policy makers from Pakistan, Philippines and Thailand. The second workshop was held in Bangkok in June 2006, and was attended by education planners from the Ministry of Education, Royal Thai Government.
The Toolkit was developed in response to the need, identified by policy makers in the Asia-Pacific region, for a systematic approach to integrating ICT into education. The Toolkit serves to guide policy makers through the planning process and provides policy options regarding the use of ICT in Education.
The Academy for Educational Development (AED), Knowledge Enterprise, and the Information for Development (infoDev) programme are UNESCO’s main partners in the development of this innovative Toolkit.
The Forum and Workshop were organized with the assistance of the UNESCO Apia office, and in cooperation with the Information for Development (infoDev) programme.
