Coaching Workshop for Thai Teacher Educators

Next Gen Coaching Workshop

As part of the “Next Generation of Teachers” project, UNESCO, in cooperation with Chiang Mai University, convened a coaching workshop for Thai teacher educators, from 28 August to 1 September 2006.

The workshop participants were from the three Teacher Education Institutes (TEIs) in Thailand which are participating in the “Next Generation of Teachers” (Next Gen) project: Chiang Mai University, Chulalongkorn University, and Surindra Rajabhat University.

The five-day workshop, which was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, provided an opportunity for the participating teacher educators to learn to integrate ICT into the curriculum in their TEI, and to share ideas on how ICT can be used to facilitate learner-centred instruction.

During the workshop, teacher educators learned how to develop effective teaching and learning materials utilizing ICT, including interactive PowerPoint presentations, and were encouraged to coach each other in the better use of ICT in the classroom. The workshop participants also learned to evaluate web sites and to use Learning Management Systems (LMS). Teacher educators also participated in activities using free and open source software and multimedia instructional programs, and the workshop provided participants with opportunities to explore and create their own “Web Quests” in various subject areas.

The participants, who came from a range of subject backgrounds and had varying levels of ICT competency, engaged in discussions to share their ideas on integrating ICT and on utilizing learner-centred methods of instruction.  At the end of the workshop, the representatives of each of the three participating TEIs developed a work plan for integrating ICT into their institution’s curriculum.

One of the outcomes of this workshop was that a network was created among the participants. This network will enable the teacher educators to continue to share their experiences on ICT use in the classroom, and further develop learner-centred methods of instruction. The network, which will be facilitated using an online forum, will continue to support and coach the participants in ICT use long after the completion of the workshop.

UNESCO’s “Next Generation of Teachers” project is supported by initiating partner, Microsoft, and by Cisco Systems.
