The "Consultative Meeting and Launch of the Next Generation of Teachers Project" amassed the knowledge and experience of participants for use in further developing and shaping the project activities.

Meeting to launch new UNESCO ICT teacher training project

The “Consultative Meeting and Launch of the Next Generation of Teachers Project”, was convened by UNESCO at the Imperial Queens Park Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand, from 16 to 18 May 2006.

The meeting was organized by the ICT in Education Unit of the UNESCO Bangkok office, with the support of project partners Microsoft and Cisco Systems.

Participants of the meeting included representatives from Ministries of Education and Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) from the ten countries in the Asia-Pacific region chosen to pilot the “Next Generation of Teachers” project. Those countries are Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, People’s Republic of China, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Viet Nam.

The aim of the Meeting was to share with the representatives from the participating countries the project’s aims and objectives, and compile information about the current situation in TEIs in the 10 participating countries regarding ICT integration and learner-centred methods of instruction. The three-day Meeting also drew on the participants’ knowledge and experience to further develop and shape the project and its activities, as well as to refine needs analysis instruments.

In addition, the Meeting was an opportunity for representatives of the Ministries of Education and TEIs to sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with UNESCO regarding the implementation of the “Next Generation of Teachers” (Next Gen) project. The signing ceremony took place as part of a Press Conference on the opening day of the Meeting.

The meeting was divided into two main parts:

1. Launch of the Next Generation of Teachers Project, held on 16 May 2006.  Representatives of Ministries of Education signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with UNESCO regarding the implementation of the Next Gen project. The signing took place during the Opening Ceremony.

2. Consultative Meeting, held from 17 to 18 May 2006.  Participants shared their best practices and discussed the project proposal, needs analysis questionnaires, needs analysis procedures and country plans.

The Next Gen project aims to improve the integration of ICT into education in the Asia-Pacific region and to encourage more learner-centred methods of instruction in schools in the region, via institutional change in TEIs.
