Deans' Forum - Bangkok

Forum participants

Forum participants

From 3 to 5 May, UNESCO, in cooperation with project partners, Microsoft (initiating partner) and Cisco Systems, will convene a forum for Deans of Education from Teacher Education Institutes (TEIs) participating in the Next Generation of Teachers (Next Gen) project. In this forum, Deans will collectively explore the challenges of integrating information and communication technologies (ICT) into teacher education and will develop plans for implementing the project in their respective TEIs.

According to Dr. Molly Lee, Coordinator of the Asia-Pacific Programme of Educational Innovation for Development (APEID) at UNESCO Bangkok, “The Forum will provide an opportunity for Deans to discuss and plan institutional change. The forum will draw attention to the changes needed in teacher education institutions in the Asia-Pacific region to enable them to make better use of  information and communication technologies in teaching”.

Dr Lee added that these institutional changes will contribute to UNESCO’s Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) programme by encouraging new ways of thinking and behaving and by facilitating access to information that will enable us to find more sustainable ways of living.
The Next Gen project was initiated in recognition of the necessity of effective programmes for preparing pre-service teachers to utilize ICT in the classroom for enhancing teaching and learning. The project aims to build the capacity of TEIs in the Asia-Pacific region to prepare the next generation of teachers successfully.

Ten countries in Asia are taking part in the Next Gen project, namely: Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, People’s Republic of China, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Viet Nam. In each of these countries, three TEIs are participating in project activities, making a total of 30 participating TEIs.

The Forum will be attended by Deans from the participating TEIs in Lao PDR, Malaysia, People’s Republic of China, Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam. The Bangkok Forum will be followed by a similar forum in Colombo, Sri Lanka, which will be attended by Deans from the participating TEIs in Cambodia, India, Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
