Pan-Canadian Education Indicators Programme (PCEIP)

Objectives

  • To help students acquire the skills needed for full participation in an increasingly complex knowledge-based environment
  • To promote the development and use of information technology in education
  • To provide valuable benchmark information against which future progress can be measured

 

Scope

  • Primary and secondary education

 

Methods Used for Data Collection

  • Canada, along with 27 countries in total, participated in the Second Information Technology in Education Study (SITES)
  • 4,000 schools participated in Canada, each of which received two questionnaires, one to be completed by the principal and another to be completed by an individual responsible for technology in the school
  • Both questionnaires included questions on the school, the use of communication technology, the training and professional development of teachers, and obstacles to the use of technology at the school

 

Indicators Used

  • Computer-student ratio
  • Internet connectivity - the percentage of students attending schools connected to the internet for educational purposes
  • Internet activities of students
  • Obstacles to fuller use of ICTs
