The Indicators Project Meeting at the 10th APEID Conference was an important opportunity to gather new and additional comments on the Guidelines Document. The session aimed to gain input from those UNESCO National Commissions and Field Offices in the Asia-Pacific who had not yet had an opportunity to comment on the document. The session was open to all National Commissions and Field Offices as well as others interested in the topic.

National Commissions and Field Offices received the third Draft of the Guidelines document prior to the Conference, allowing for focused, productive and participatory dialogue during the Session. Copies of the report were also available at the meeting.

The session began a three-month open comment period (December 2006-March 2007) on the Guidelines. This timeline will ensure that maximum input is received from stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific region as well as encourage greater ownership of the document and commitment towards Monitoring and Assessment of Progress during the DESD.

Meeting Objectives:

  • To continue to ensure the practical nature and relevance of the document to stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific.
  • To introduce a 3-month ‘open comment’ period for the Guidelines Document.
  • To discuss methods for commenting on the Guidelines during the 3-month period, eg. E-lists, or Online open discussion groups through Yahoo or Google.
  • To invite new and additional input from all National Commissions Field Offices in the region.
  • To introduce the agenda for the next stages of the project.
  • To provide opportunities for greater ownership and commitment from Asia-Pacific stakeholders and invite their involvement in next stages.

Key Themes:

  • Further clarifying the National Commissions role in the development of ESD Indicators.
  • Further clarifying the challenges that National Commissions face in the development of ESD Indicators.

Key Questions:

  • What Asia-Pacific research and experience can inform the Guidelines doc?

  • How do the Guidelines assist you in the development of ESD Indicators? How can they be improved to increase assistance?

  • What opportunities exist for stakeholders to be involved in disseminating and promoting the use of the Guidelines?
