Drawing Benefits from Girl’s Education
06.12.2011A student from Papua New Guinea has won the annual Asia Pacific gender equality in education drawing competition.
Brenda, 17, was announced as one of the 24 young winners of the 3rd Annual UNGI Gender Equality in Education competition.
The contest aims to raise public awareness of imbalances in girls and boys education opportunities in Asia Pacific. It also paints a picture of the benefits reaped from equality for both girls and boys.
“My drawing depicts the two sides to a girl’s education - enhancing better understanding and contribution to nation building – both culturally and in a modern way,” Brenda describes.
In her drawing, Brenda links culture and girl’s education, which respects customary traditions and builds a national culture with gender equality.
“Girl’s education leads to nation building and development and contributes to better living in a society,” she says.
More than 3,000 drawings were received from 24 countries from Bhutan to Afghanistan. A winner from each of the entering countries was chosen by public vote.
Winning drawings from each country will be featured in the “Gender in Education Calendar 2012”. This calendar is created by partners of the United Nations Girls Education Initiative (UNGEI) East Asia and the Pacific, and South Asia. It will be available online in late December.
