16.04.2009Global Action Week, an international campaign advocating free, quality education for all, will take place from 20 to 26 April. Organized annually, the theme this year is “youth and adult literacy and life-long learning”.
According to the 2009 Global Monitoring Report, 776 million adults around the world are illiterate and 75 million children are not in school. Millions more leave school early without acquiring basic literacy and numeracy skills.
Led by the Global Campaign for Education, the highlight is the “Big Book”, a collection of short stories about how education changes lives. “Big Read” events will be organized around the world.
The Global Campaign for Education is a civil society movement with aims to end the global education crisis. Members include civil society organizations, trade unions, child rights campaigners, teachers, parents and students from all over the world.
UNESCO as coordinator of the EFA movement and the United Nations Literacy Decade (2003-2012), supports this campaign and will be organizing activities around the world related to the “Big Read”.
