Gender equality in education captured in 2012 calendar

25.01.2012

How does girls’ and boys’ equality in education help us all? The question is put on a front page of the Gender Equality in Education 2012 Calendar. This colorful desk calendar recently released by partners of the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI) East Asia and the Pacific, and South Asia aims to raise public awareness on regional issues of gender equality in education and paints a picture of the benefits reaped from gender equality in education.

The calendar features 24 winning drawings from the 2011 UNGEI Asia-Pacific Drawing Contest by young people from 24 countries across the region. The illustrations show how gender equality in education benefits everyone and show some facts and figures on gender equality in education.

“Did you know that a girl’s interest and participation in math and science is negatively impacted at an early age by the stereotype that boys are better in these subjects?”

“Did you know that domestic work, typically undertaken by girls aged 8-12, can be as detrimental to children as work done outside the home and it is reported to be the reason that one-third of out-of-school children do not attend school?”

“Did you know that almost two-thirds of out-of-school girls globally belong to ethnic groups in their own countries?”

These are a few examples.

More than 3,000 drawings were received across the region in this annual art competition. Of the twenty-four winning entries from each participating countries, 12 are shown in each month, and 12 others have been turned into postcards

The calendar is a daily reminder of the benefits of gender equality in education, and a useful tool in mobilizing support for transforming mindsets and change stereotypical behaviors and practices on the path towards achieving gender equality. Let us begin today!
