The Directors-General, Deputy Directors-General and officials of the two Ministries, and representatives from UNESCO, INGOs and NGOs attended the launching ceremony conducted at the Lake View Hall, Aureum Palace Hotel.

The ceremony began at 10 am with the opening remark by HE Dr Myo Myint. In his opening remark, he mentioned a Myanmar saying: ‘The mother and the father may be called the first teachers’, and said: “The parents are the ones who show the young child how to survive in the world. When the children are of school age, the parents turn them over to school teachers, but they need to continue with their efforts to ensure that their children have a good education. … Parenting education (PE) is very important to ensure proper child care and development and it is especially necessary for parents in remote areas where there are no pre-primary programmes in the communities.”

Next, HE Daw Su Su Hlaing stated in her opening remark that this PE Guidebook to be launched today contains early childhood and care educational information and messages that are useful not only to the parents but also to family members, caregivers and community members who are interested in early childhood care and development, and the Facilitator’s Handbook is a good educational material that can be used in training of PE facilitators. Therefore, it would be great if both PE publications could be widely distributed to Community Learning Centres, Village Libraries and Reading Circles which exist in the townships and village tracts. She concluded her opening remark by saying: “I would like to convey my special thanks to all responsible persons from abroad, Myanmar and UNESCO who provided technical and financial assistance in developing and publishing these PE publications.”

Dr Lwin Lwin Soe, the Secretary General of Myanmar National Commission for UNESCO, briefly explained about UNESCO’s Asia Pacific Programme of Education for All (APPEAL) Bangkok and APPEAL in her welcoming remark. Then Dr. Myint Myint San, Programme Officer, UNESCO made a presentation on the development Process and the contents of the PE Publications.

Finally, the three Ministers presented the PE Publications to representatives from the two Ministries, Myanmar Red Cross Society and NGOs. The ceremony ended at 12 pm.

In the afternoon, the Introductory Workshop, facilitated by the country team members, took place with officials who are involved in Early Childhood Development at the same hall at 1 pm. During the workshop they discussed the contents in groups and way forward for implementation till 4:30 pm.
