<p><font color="#33711E"><strong>Education for Natural Disaster Preparedness in Asia-Pacific in the context of ESD</strong></font></p>
Workshop in Jakarta

Subsequent a preliminary strategy meeting and two workshops held in Bangkok and New Delhi, UNESCO Jakarta and the Center for Disaster Mitigation of the Institute of Technology, Bandung, co-organized the National workshop, “Education for Natural Disaster Preparedness within the United Nation’s Decade on ESD” on 16 September 2005 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The workshop was attended by various groups, with representatives from the educational sector, the civil society and the government. During the workshop, Education materials for disaster preparedness have been developed in order to raise awareness and to develop community preparedness. There are perceived needs for producing more practical and user-friendly disaster education materials for inclusion in a more integrated ESD curriculum for the formal and the non-formal education sector. This includes various target groups and stakeholders such as school children, different types of communities as well as the less informed actors involved in policy making processes.
The participants contributed their experiences on the planning, development and use of education materials in three working groups. The three working groups discussed the following:
- Natural disaster preparedness education materials for schools
- Natural disaster preparedness education materials community education
- Natural disaster preparedness education materials for government agencies and institutions
The sessions focussed on the following key issues:
Morning Session
- What natural disasters will this project address?
- Best disaster preparedness materials in Asia-Pacific region and in Indonesia
- Identify the project beneficiaries, the needed resources
Afternoon Session
- Identify method and practices for introducing Natural Disaster Education Preparedness Materials for different target groups
- Formulate recommendations and action plan for developing Natural Disaster Education Preparedness Materials for Schools, Community, Government officials
