Mongolia is a landlocked country located in Central Asia. It borders Russia to the north and China to the south, east and west. With an estimated population of 2.75 million in 2010 (UN DESA n.d.), and occupying a territory of approximately 1,564,000 square kilometres, Mongolia is 1 of the least densely populated countries in the world, with 2 people per square kilometre (UNESCO 2008). The country is becoming increasingly urbanized, with 62% (Central Intelligence Agency n.d.) of the population living in cities, most in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. The rest of the population lives a semi-nomadic lifestyle residing across the vast territory of the country. Mongolia is an ethnically homogeneous nation populated mainly by Mongols, but a small proportion of the population (up to 5%) are Kazakhs. The official language is Mongolian (UNESCO n.d.).
