Key project components

The 2006-2007 project "HIV/AIDS Vulnerability and Risk Reduction among Ethnic Minority Groups through Communication Strategies in the Greater Mekong Subregion" has three main components: culturally and linguistically appropriate radio dramas for ethnic minorities; and Geographic information Systems and mapping, and the HIV and AIDS Clearinghouse as the main planning and information management tools to support project implementation.

Radio programming

UNESCO expanded its radio programming work in the GMS to include new ethnic minority languages: Akha in Thailand; Tai Neua in Yunnan, Province of China; Khmu in Lao PDR; and Kreung in Cambodia. In addition, the project experimented with, and pilot, the production of radio dramas in low-resource settings where established broadcasting infrastructure is limited or unavailable, and local languages are unwritten. This pilot was developed using Kreung, one of the ethnic minority languages spoken in Ratanakiri Province, Cambodia. Read more here.

GIS and mapping

UNESCO expanded its GIS activities from Thailand to Cambodia and Lao PDR. GIS mapping under this project included a GMS language mapping, and migration, ethnic and citizenship mapping as well as updating of existing maps, including maps on HIV/AIDS prevalence and sex services. Establishing new databases, developing local capacity and networking were key components of this work. Read more here.

HIV and AIDS Clearinghouse

The HIV and AIDS Clearinghouse was established in 2003 as the key HIV/AIDS database and information support facility of UNESCO Bangkok. Under the 2006-2007 ADB-funded project "HIV/AIDS Vulnerability and Risk Reduction among Ethnic Minority Groups through Communication Strategies in the Greater Mekong Subregion", the HIV/AIDS Clearing House activities included a special focus on ethnic minority groups, and hard-to-reach disadvantaged groups.
