Illustrating the Right to Education in Afghanistan for Girls and Boys
04.01.2012A student from Afghanistan has won the annual Asia Pacific gender equality in education drawing competition.
Hamdullah, 17, was announced as one of the 24 young winners of the 3rd Annual UNGEI Gender Equality in Education Competition. The contest aims to raise public awareness of imbalances in girls and boys education opportunities in Asia Pacific.
“To acquire knowledge is the duty of every Muslim man and women,” Hamdullah draws a text on his/ her drawing of a female teacher in a classroom, teaching a boy and a girl. It is written on the chalk board, along with “men and women’s rights are equal in Islam”.
More than 3,000 drawings were received from 24 countries from Bhutan to Afghanistan. A winner from each of the entering countries was chosen by public vote.
Winning drawings from each countryfeature in the ‘Gender in Education Calendar 2012’. This calendar is created by partners of the United Nations Girls Education Initiative (UNGEI) East Asia and the Pacific, and South Asia.
