Send an e-card to your teacher and celebrate teachers from Asia and the Pacific
30.09.2011Regional e-cards have been developed by UNESCO Bangkok in partnership with members of the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI) in East Asia and the Pacific. The e cards are for World Teachers Day, celebrated on 5 October 2011. Sending an e card to teachers will thank them and recognize their role in promoting gender equality.
The core of an education system is its teachers. They play an indispensable role as purveyors of knowledge and values.
World Teachers Day celebrates the teaching profession. The theme for 2011 is gender equality in education.
The goal of an education system that meets the needs of both genders has not yet been achieved. In Asia and the Pacific, the majority of teachers at the primary education level are female. However, the opposite is true at secondary and tertiary levels, in the subjects of science and maths and in remote and rural areas, where the majority of teachers are male.
Teachers in the region play a vital role in promoting gender equality. Stereotypes within education perpetuate gender roles in life. But providing a gender responsive classroom environment can reduce gender bias in society. This ensures that children can reach their full potential, regardless of their sex.
Send an e-card today to celebrate teachers and their role in children's success. To do so, click on this link.
Cards were designed by using drawings made by children from across Asia and the Pacific, which were received as part of the UNGEI Drawing Contest 2011
