Building Capacity and Interdisciplinary Platform
Coasts, oceans and their associated ecosystems, endowed with unique biodiversity and resources upon which many livelihoods depend, are degrading faster than the capacity to manage them sustainably. IOC/WESTPAC capacity development seeks to strengthen scientific, technological and institutional structures through the establishment of “IOC Regional Network of Training and Research Centers on Oceanography” and conduct of a series of topic-specific trainings to develop the capacities of young scientists and their national institutes to conduct the science and observations needed to underpin informed decision-making for sustainable use of the ocean and coastal seas.
