The 12th President of the University of British Columbia (UBC), Professor Stephen J. Toope has enjoyed a successful career as a scholar and leader in higher education, with roles ranging from providing support to exceptional Canadian and international professors and graduate students to human rights work for the United Nations. His international perspective and background in human rights issues have prepared him well to lead UBC in its pursuit of learning, research, and global service. Professor Toope was most recently President of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation, an independent, private, and non-partisan organization created to promote outstanding research and interaction between researchers and policy makers. A Canadian citizen, Professor Toope is an accomplished public speaker in both English and French, with scholarly interests covering public international law, legal theory, human rights, international dispute resolution, and family law. Professor Toope earned his PhD from Trinity College, Cambridge, England (1987), his undergraduate degree in common law (LLB) and civil law (BCL) with honours from McGill University (1983), and graduated magna cum laude with his AB in History and Literature from Harvard University (1979).
