Experts reconvene to refine project on South-East Asia Shared Histories

On 16 and 17 September 2014, expert historians will meet in Bangkok to discuss ways to raise awareness about the shared histories of South-East Asia.

In 2013, a first expert meeting was convened. Participating experts from several South-East Asian countries acknowledged that history classes are often geared at fostering patriotic ideas, sometimes by casting neighboring countries in negative ways. With the forthcoming 2015 ASEAN community, improving the quality of history curricula is one way to encourage mutual understanding and respect among people in the region. This second meeting will gather once more experts from around the region to discuss how such goal could be tackled in practical terms. Among other issues, they will attempt to identify priority themes for educational materials that will encourage better neighbors’ relations.

See the tentative meeting agenda here.
