Session 7: Developing a cultural diversity programming lens on “Organizing conference, workshop and training”

Developing the lens is one way to fulfill the requirements of the UNESCO's strategy to promote cultural diversity. In this session, Richard Engelhardt from UNESCO Bangkok introduced the concept and objectives of the cultural diversity programming lens. A general framework for the lens was essentially drawn from the important principles of the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity.

The presentation was followed by a guided practical exercise using the guidelines and indicators in the framework in which the participants worked together and brainstormed to develop a sample lens on "organizing conference, workshop and training". It is noted that making and improving the lens is a participative process and that it can be applied and adapted to a variety of programmes, policies, and projects. Needless to say, there is a leeway for the lens to be appropriated in certain programmes/projects.
