Education for Sustainable Development Toolkit

The Toolkit on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) was authored by Ms. Rosalyn McKeown, PhD of University of Tennessee.

The toolkit presents a detailed theoretical account of ESD and its historical development in the light of Agenda 21’s chapter 36. Building on this theoretical framework, it brings together a dozen training activities, which could be useful in promoting the understanding and implementation of sustainable lifestyles within communities through the development of sustainable communal goals. In addition, some of the activities focus on integration of ESD perspectives into the teaching and learning processes in the formal and non-formal education sectors. This aspect is further elaborated by a case study in the concluding chapter.

This study highlights an example of the Canadian education system where ESD was integrated through the redefining and rewriting of the existing curriculum by a wider stakeholders’ involvement including the local communities. It fulfills the need for building the capacity of teachers, community organizers, civil society members and trainers working in the public and civil society organizations.

In some countries, translations are already adapted. For instance, it was translated, adapted and published jointly by IUCN Pakistan and UNESCO Pakistan in Urdu entitled Taleem Baray Payedar Taraqqi, tarbiyat karon aur asatiza kay liay rahnuma tarbiyati mawad (Education for Sustainable Development: A Training Guide for Teachers and Trainers). The adaptation in Urdu is accompanied by local examples, wherever applicable. A whole new section on the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development was also added to it.

Chinese version

The ESD Toolkit has also been translated into Chinese by Prof. Wang Min and Dr. Wei Dongying from Beijing Normal University and has been published by China Geology Publishing House in September 2005. It is part of a series of books on ESD that are used as textbooks for teachers training or graduate classes at Beijing Normal University. Until today, more than 500 Chinese teachers have been trained with the ESD Toolkit.
