Gender Mainstreaming in Action
Gender mainstreaming is an approach used to integrate women's and men's needs and experiences into the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies and programmes in all political, economic and societal spheres so that women and men benefit equally, and inequality is not perpetuated.
Organizations that most effectively mainstream gender into their activities have a gender-responsive organizational culture. This is a culture in which everyone responds positively to the organization's requirement that they actively demonstrate their commitment to advance gender equality in their daily work and in their interactions with others.
Gender mainstreaming has been adopted by the UN and widely in government and non-government spheres after mainstreaming was advocated by the 1995 global women's conference in Beijing.
